Surely a better system would be 'opt in for banned porno'?

You mean parents could instead call the ISP and ask to ban it? That seems a much easier way to go about it.

a long hard slippery slope

Personally I think it's a bit silly to ban pornography on the internet, it's one step below blindfolding your children before they enter a newsagents.

However, if there must be a ban - it should be opted into. Then those parents who really are that fussed about it, can ring up their ISP and get it banned.

The Australian government was busted abusing their blocking system to shut down certain political sites. It may be a slippery slope but it's happened before.

Well, the net is growing, it's virtually vast and infinite. I'm certain we'll find some use for it, besides searching for porn. Reading manga for instance is fun. :)

... As I recall most anime and manga can be classified as soft porn. I mean, it's ecchi in that sense. :o NO!!! I reject, deny, and pray that such censorship will never come to pass.

Definitely. The default should be "everything", and if you decide that the internet connection shouldn't allow porn sites, then that's fine, you can just go with that option. Let the other 99% of internet users do their carnal thing.

Having the opposite is bullshit. You should have to opt in for censorship, not opt out of it.

As for "So what else are we meant to use the internet for?", I use the internet for so many things I couldn't list it all. All I can say is, having the internet has broken so many barriers, allowed me to "traverse" so many subjects, discussions and places, that not having the internet would be shockingly tragic.

If the porn goes from the co.uk, there will only be one co.uk site.

Parents should opt-in for porn banning by their own choice. It's really awkward to call the ISP and tell them to "enable porn." Most people will simply not do it due to the negativity associated with porn-watching in the society.

Otherwise, the ISP's should provide an online porn activation system (FREE! it's bloody idiotic to have to pay to watch free porn). And the ISP MUST be legally forced to maintain user privacy by denying ANYONE (inc. ISP staff and government officials) access to which user watches porn and which doesn't. (Statistics are fine though, and it will be interesting to know the stats.)

Anyway I wonder how they will block legitimate porn websites and avoid false positives. This will need the creation of a massive human team to scour through ALL available internet sites and unbiasedly mark them as porn or not porn. An automatic system is doomed to fail with true negatives and false positives.

And also, how about the use of proxies to bypass blocks?

I think if someone is deemed too young for porn by their parents but know enough about proxies to be able to bypass blocks (I think I was about 14), then they have earned all the porn/restricted content they can find. At which point, the parents need to step it up on their end and actively monitor their childs web doings.

Based on the filtering software I've seen in use, that's a definite possibility. Porn sites will still get through, of course.

There's no filter as good as a human being making adult decisions, and no better block than turning the computer off.

"60% of nine- to 19-year-olds had found porn online (sic)"

Oh no, the horror, whatever are we going to do...... :|

"to try to combat the early sexualisation of children"

Like having access to porn is the biggest contributor to this. If you ask me, it's much more important that a family can just talk normally about sex, than it is to block your children from ever seeing porn.

But back on topic, I think this is a terrible idea. Giving families the possibility to opt-out would actually be a good thing, but this? This is just an attempt at censorship.

Such a system can be abused way too easily. Allow porn or just shut down the internet. That is really the only way to stop children from seeing porn.

On sexualisation of children.

It's pretty much complete and utter nonsense stemming from people's foggy beliefs that when they were kids every child was polite, quaint and perfect until they turned 18.

I've heard that rates of teenage pregnancy in the UK are their lowest in something like 20 years.

Ironically enough I figure if they ban all porn sites and hop on that trend you'll just get more teen pregnancies.
