A while back (couple dozen years) there was a similarly stupid claim about traffic fatalities in the US. It's in my 1st year statistics coursework somewhere...
I suggest you look up the traffic density stats for the past few years and see if it's simply due to less cars on the street in general.

The first person who dies as a result of driving at high speed into one of those magic rocks is really going to screw things up for them over in Austria.

The worst part of this story is that the choice to install magic rocks probably had to go through some sort of traffic commission board approval process or something.

Lukas: So what's on the agenda for today then?
Felix: Well we have the new safety proposals for the Salzburg motorway.
Lukas: Yes, I've been looking at the cost estimates and speed cameras and safety barriers seem rather expensive. Do we have anything else we could try?
Felix: Well there is always the magic rocks approach? Very cheap and they come 100% Druid approved.
Lukas: Excellent, all in favour say I.
Everyone: I.
Thetis: What if courage and imagination became everyday mortal qualities? What will become of us?
Zeus: We would no longer be needed. But, for the moment, there is sufficient cowardice, sloth and mendacity down there on Earth to last forever.

In fact, this "news story" is about 2.5 years old. In the meantime, the executive board running the ASFINAG has been replaced as part of due process in politics and the new guys have accordingly deemed this 'project' bullshit.

And no, I'm not going to translate it, you'll either have to believe me or learn German.

The title of the article sounds like a drug deal.
